Curfew continues in Kashmir as Pakistan’s PM writes to UN

A curfew continues to be enforced in Indian-administered Kashmir for the 43rd day, as clashes between security forces and protestors rumbled on.

The curfew, in place across the entire Srinagar district, Anantnag town and Pampore town, was being enforced “as a precautionary measure," a police official was quoted as saying. Telephone and internet services also remain suspended.

As tension in the hotly disputed region continues, Pakistan’s prime minister wrote to the United Nations human rights chief in Geneva, calling for investigations into "grave human rights violations in the Indian-occupied Kashmir," according to a foreign ministry spokesperson.

At least 65 people have been killed so far, with as many as 6,000 thought to be wounded in clashes with Indian troops. Hospitals are teeming with patients, and many are struggling to cope with the influx of injuries. "We are in physical and mental stress," said Nisarul Hassan, a senior consultant at the SMHS Hospital.

Meanwhile the Indian army apologised for the death of a 30 year old college lecturer, who died whilst in Indian custody. He was reportedly beaten whilst being detained. The commander of India's Northern Army has ordered an inquiry into the incident.

"These actions are absolutely not sanctioned,” said Indian Lieutenant General DS Hooda. These actions are absolutely not tolerated."
