Ushering in Tamil Heritage Month, Pierre Poilievre, Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, issued a statement on the new year recognising Tamil Heritage Month and reaffirming his party's commitment to justice and accountability for the Tamil Genocide. His also celebrated the significant contributions of Canadians of Tamil heritage.
Poilievre's statement explicitly recognised the Tamil Genocide whilst noting his regret that Tamil culture has not always been respected.
"Sadly, the incredible culture we celebrate this month has not always been afforded the respect it. deserves. This was sadly all to apparent in the horrific events of the Tamil Genocide - a tragedy whose victims are still awaiting justice.
In Tamil Heritage Month and throughout the year, Canada's Common Sense Conservatives stand by our conviction that the perpetrators of such crimes must be brought to account".
Poilievre also noted the need to "celebrate an exceptional and industrious people.
“Canadians of Tamil heritage have enriched our communities for decades while remaining deeply connected to their historic roots”, his statement reads.
His statement further highlighted the profound cultural contributions of Tamils, noting the vibrancy of their ancient culture, which is expressed through language, music, arts, and cuisine. “These traditions have found a home in the true north, strong and free,” Poilievre said, emphasizing the significant role Tamils have played in shaping Canadian society.
Drawing attention to the values of faith, family, and freedom, Poilievre commended Canadians of Tamil heritage for their achievements, including the establishment of businesses, cultural organizations, and community media outlets that continue to strengthen the fabric of Canadian life.
