Colombia resumes bombing raids against Farc

The Colombian government has announced it will resume a bombing campaign against Farc militants, after the death of 10 government soldiers in an attack yesterday.

Colombia’s President Juan Manuel Santos said, "I have ordered the armed forces to lift the suspension of air strikes on Farc positions until further notice."

Farc had been observing a unilateral ceasefire since December, with the Colombian government in turn suspending air strikes against the militants. Last week, Mr Santos had extended the freeze on air strikes, as talks between the warring parties continued. However, this has now been lifted.

"Let this be clear to the FARC: I'm not going to be pressured... by vile acts like this to make a decision on a bilateral ceasefire," added Mr Santos.

Meanwhile Farc negotiator Félix Antonio Muñoz commented on the incident yesterday, saying,
“It appears that the cause is the incoherence on the part of the government, to be ordering military operations against a guerrilla force that has declared a truce.”
