Hundreds of demonstrators were attacked by smoke grenades and water canons fired by Cambodian police today, amid tensions in the Cambodian capital over the country’s disputed national elections.
One protestor died in the clashes, as opposition party supporters pledged to continue mass rallies ahead of the first scheduled session of parliament which opposition leaders have declared they will boycott.
The leader of the opposition party Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), Sam Rainsy, told 2000 protestors at the rally that MP’s will refuse to attend parliament unless the government agrees to allow an independent investigation into allegations of widespread vote rigging.
