The Burundian government rejected the mediator on the bases that a critical UN report on Burundi’s elections demonstrated bias.
The UN mediator Abdoulaye Bathily, was blamed by the Burundian government for the critical report, which in a letter to the UN Secretary General, said,
“He has produced a critical report not reflecting reality on the scene, saying the elections on June 29 were not ‘free and credible,’ while (the ruling coalition) believe that theses elections were transparent, fair, free and credible and were held in peace and security.”
The previous UN mediator, Said Djinnit, left the role after a few weeks amidst criticism from the opposition that he was working in the Burundian government’s favour.
