Both sides of the conflict in the Central African Republic are responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity, found a United Nations preliminary Commission of Inquiry report.
The report stressed that, "the displacement of Muslims affected by whatever party so far is a matter of protection and the preservation of human life, not a matter of ethnic cleansing.”
It further warned that the situation in CAR could turn into genocide if the international community failed to react with ‘speed and determination’ reports the Washington Post.
Amnesty international objected to the report's reluctance to pin an ethnic dimension to the current violence in the region. Senior crisis response adviser Joanne Mariner, wrote in an email to AP,
"I would say that ... the report is ignoring the fact that the massive displacement of the Muslim population in the Central African Republic is not simply a consequence of the violence there, but its goal".
Mariner went on to add that Christian militia fighters "have made no secret of their intent to kill or forcibly expel all Muslims from the areas under their control".
