Over 100,000 Basques marched through the streets of Bilbao, defying a ban imposed by a court in Madrid.

The protest was initially planned by supporters of Basque political prisoners, who campaigned for the detainees to be moved in to prisons closer to their homes.

The two main Basque parties, the Basque pro-independence party Bildu and the more moderate nationalist PNV (Partido Nacionalista Vasco), also joined the march, saying the rally was for "human rights, understanding and peace", reported Reuters.

Around 600 ETA members are thought to be in Spain’s prisons.
