Andrew Charlton, MP for Parramatta in New South Wales, called on parliament to declare January as the Tamil Heritage Month, stating it was an opportunity to "honour Tamil contributions and ensure the ongoing vibrancy of the Tamil community" in the country.
Charlton said the designation of the Tamil Heritage Month across Australia would "celebrate a culture over 5,000 years old, providing younger generations with an opportunity to connect with their roots, and inviting the wider community to appreciate Tamil contributions to art, philosophy and language".
"It would also honour ancient Tamil works like the Tirukkural, which continues to inspire us with its timeless insights into ethics, governance and human values," he continued.
"This recognition would highlight the contributions of Tamil Australians in fields like business, education and public service while fostering pride within the Tamil community. Tamil Heritage month would benefit local businesses. Grocery stores, restaurants and clothing shops, for example, would see increased activity as the community prepares for Pongal. Recent Tamil cultural festivals have drawn strong support, with thousands attending, showcasing the enthusiasm for cultural celebrations and the demand for a dedicated Tamil heritage month. This is an opportunity to celebrate Australia's rich multicultural tapestry, honour Tamil contributions and ensure the ongoing vibrancy of the Tamil community."
January is already recognised as Tamil Heritage Month in the UK and Canada.
