AU to reconsider membership of the ICC

The African Union has called a special summit to discuss a mass withdrawal from the Internationl Criminal Court in protest at the trial of Kenya’s Deputy President William Ruto.

A letter sent to the ICC signed by African leaders argued that Ruto’s presence at The Hague was detrimental to the future of Kenya.

Speaking to the press, an AU official outlined,

“The Kenyans have been criss-crossing Africa in search of support for their cause, even before the parliament voted to withdraw from the ICC.”

The official further warned that it was not clear if the required two-thirds majority vote would be achieved to result in the AU withdrawing from the ICC.
