Tamils in the North-East marked 19 years since the death of Anton Balasingham, the chief negotiator and political strategist of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
Balasingham, aged 68 years, passed away at his home in South London on December 14, 2006. His death sparked grief across the Tamil nation, with three days of mourning declared.

Floral garlands were placed before his portrait and a lamp was lit at the public memorial square in Vankalavadi, Velanai, to remember Balasingham.

Another remembrance event was held by the Jananayaga Poralikal Katchi in Vadamarachchi East, Jaffna to commemorate Balasingham.

Vavuniya
The 19th death anniversary of Anton Balasingham was observed yesterday evening in the Thirunavarkulam area of Vavuniya.


The commemoration, organised by the Ex-Combatants’ Welfare Association, saw floral garlands placed before his portrait and tribute paid through the offering of flowers.
Members of the public, well-wishers, and families of former combatants were present to pay their respects.


Kilinochchi

The 19th annual commemoration of Anton Balasingham, was held this morning at the Arivagam office of the Kilinochchi District of the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK). Tributes were paid by lighting the flame of sacrifice before his sacred portrait.

Among those present were ITAK MP S Shritharan, members of local authorities, party members, supporters, and activists.
