Muslims protest election of Tamil deputy mayor in Kalmunai

Supporters of the All Ceylon Makkal Congress, a breakaway faction of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, protested against the election of a Tamil deputy mayor to the Kalmunai Municipal Council in Amparai.

The SLMC’s candidate for mayor won with the support of the TULF, and in turn the SLMC council members supported the TULF’s candidate for deputy mayor, defeating the ACMC’s Muslim candidate and electing the first Tamil deputy mayor in Kalmunai in forty years.

ACMC supporters protested against the election on Friday, with placards calling the SLMC MP H. M. M. Harees a “traitor” for negotiating with the TULF.
