Missing have ‘left country illegally’ claims Sri Lankan PM

Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe claimed that he has no information regarding missing persons on the island and instead suggested that many of the missing may have left Sri Lanka illegally.

Speaking in parliament, Mr Wickremesinghe said that there were no police records on the missing. Responding to Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake, he instead stated that the missing “may have left the country illegally through unconventional channels,” according to the New Indian Express.

His comments came as relatives of the missing continued to hunger strike in Vavuniya demanding information about their missing family members.
