Increasing militarisation: Sri Lankan Navy opens new buildings at Jaffna base

The Sri Lankan navy declared open several newly constructed buildings at its base inside the Kankesanthurai High Security Zone in Jaffna earlier this year.

Sri Lanka’s Commander of the Northern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Jayantha De Silva, declared open the ground floor of new Command Wardroom Complex, Command Civil Engineering Building and the Parade Ground of SLNS Uththara, during a visit to the base.

The base is built on occupied land categorised as a ‘high security zone’, which remains inaccessible to locals and landowners, nine years after the end of the war. The owners of the land, like many of the other ‘high security zones’ across the peninsula, remain in displacement camps almost three decades after their displacement.
