Former Catalan President renounces leadership from exile

Former Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont announced his decision to renounce leadership of Catalonia on Wednesday.

Speaking from hi self-exile in Berlin, Mr Puigdemont, pointed to Catalan lawmaker Quim Torra as a strong candidate to take on the role of regional president.

“The intolerance and the lack of respect of the state towards the will of the citizens of Catalonia have appeared clearly in the eyes of the world. I personally understand the effort and sacrifice of taking office in such extreme circumstances. I hope he assumes responsibility in the coming days and that he forms a government immediately. We will continue fighting in defence of our rights,” said the former Catalonia president.

The announcement came after Spain’s Constitutional Court on Wednesday accepted an appeal form the government that blocked pro-independence politicians in Catalonia from voting in Puigdemont while he remains in exile.
