Australia to deport Tamil asylum seeker to Sri Lanka

A Tamil asylum seeker who had fled Sri Lanka is to be deported from Australia, The Guardian reports.

The man whose identity is being protected for fear of reprisal on return to Sri Lanka was handcuffed this morning at Villawood detention centre in view of deportation tonight.

He is being deported without his asylum claim being processed as he failed to meet the October 1 deadline, the paper reported.

His planned deportation comes just days after the United Nations committee against torture advised the Australian government that asylum seekers from Sri Lanka are at risk of "torture and rape" if deported back to the island.

We need your support

Sri Lanka is one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a journalist. Tamil journalists are particularly at threat, with at least 41 media workers known to have been killed by the Sri Lankan state or its paramilitaries during and after the armed conflict.

Despite the risks, our team on the ground remain committed to providing detailed and accurate reporting of developments in the Tamil homeland, across the island and around the world, as well as providing expert analysis and insight from the Tamil point of view
