A very military Christmas in Kilinochchi

The Sri Lankan army's 57th Division held a Christmas event in the Tamil region of Kilinochchi on Monday, aimed at "promoting religious reconciliation and peace among all communities in Kilinochchi area", the army said on its website.


Military arrange Christmas programme in Kilinochchi included a dance with Tamil children lighting candles before a large cut out of the whole island, with the words: "WE ARE SRI LANKANS".

Troops, wearing civilian clothes, distributed gifts to children who were present at the event. See more here.

The 57th Division, under the leadership of Major General Jagath Dias, is accused of carrying out extensive atrocities against the Tamil people during the final stages of the armed conflict against the LTTE in 2008 and 2009, including the bombing of churches, hospitals and other civilians areas resulting in the deaths of tens of thousands of Tamils.
