Protesters disrupt workshop in Colombo for Tamil journalists

11:12 BST

A press workshop in Colombo for Tamil journalists was disrupted today after protesters gathered outside Sri Lanka's Press Institute, where the workshop was to take place, the journalist Dushyanthini reports.

Last night, eleven Tamil journalists travelling to the workshop were stopped and questioned by security forces, whilst the driver of the vehicle was detained. See more here.

"This was the 3rd training for northern journalists which was disrupted in just 2 months (May-July 2014)," Dushyanthini tweeted.

Last month, a workshop in Colombo for Tamil journalists from the North-East was disrupted after a mob of Sinhala protesters, including members of the Buddhist monk group, Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) and military personnel, gathered outside the hotel, where the event was due to take place, demanding that the building be evacuated immediately.

"Even changing the venue from hotel to Sri Lanka Press Institute didn't work at all! They are all out to stop us from conducting the training!" Dushyanthini added.

Condemning the incident, the workshop organiser, Transparency International, said the “journalists were labelled as LTTE agents because they are Tamils and since they work in the Tamil language”.

“This is the kind of power that some organizations have to influence the civil administration. These journalists went back home after sleepless nights due to the hardships they faced. It has since come to light that people from the Military were among protesters,” TI added in a statement.
